A little bit about us…..
Carlie and Karen met through a shared love of wild swimming. That first meeting by the sea revealed a deeper kinship — a mutual affection for making, for colour, and for the calm, restorative power of the coast. From that connection they founded Fraileach, a small studio where coastal-inspired art and objects are sold for everyday use.
Fraileach rests on three commitments: considered design, skilled making, and a close relationship with place. Each piece begins with the shore — the piece of weathered rock, the sweep of kelp, the changing palette of tide and sky. Whether hand-painted prints, stitched textiles, pressed seaweed, objects are designed to be both beautiful and durable: to live with you, be used, and be passed on. Fraileach’s products are small-scale and thoughtfully made: quietly crafted objects rooted in the landscape that inspired them.
Their work is informed by a lived relationship with the sea and by the restorative practice of hot-and-cold therapy. The contrast of steam and plunge — the slow heat of the sauna followed by the shock of cold water — is central to how they think, it is a practice that sharpens the senses, calms the mind and reinforces the simple pleasures of touch, texture and place.
This is something that we never thought we would end up doing, but yet, looking back it makes perfect sense………
Creating art from the sea…..Fraileach: to us is the colours of seaweed, their form, the hundreds of different species, the sea of which it’s housed and the friendship it’s helped us form. We are so excited to share Fraileach with you.’
